Degrees in Hospitality

The hospitality industry can span the work of those in hotels, restaurants, resorts, sports arenas, and more. For management positions, the Bureau of Labor Statistics claims most employers look for candidates with specialized training, especially a college degree in hotel, restaurant, or hospitality management.

Hospitality degrees are found under a number of titles and can be earned at a variety of post-secondary institutions, including specialized training programs. LeCordon Bleu programs offer diplomas and associate degrees in hospitality and restaurant management at their 13 nationwide locations.

Many community colleges also offer certificates and associate degrees in hospitality.

Students interested in a bachelor degree can seek one out online or through a traditional, on-campus program. The University of Phoenix Online offers a bachelor of science in hospitality management entirely online, while the Rosen College of Hospitality Management in Orlando, FL offers a bachelor of science degree in hospitality and tourism management.

In addition to a post-secondary degree, work experience is very important in the industry. Many college programs include internship opportunities that can be very beneficial to have during a job search. Some colleges also have on-site restaurants, hotels, and meeting facilities that provide students with hands-on opportunities to put to use the skills taught in the classroom.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistic, employment in hotels and other accommodations is expected to increase by 17% in the coming decade. Event and meeting planners will see a 16% increase.

College graduates with degrees in hotel or hospitality management should have better opportunities for jobs at full-service hotels and for advancement than those without a degree. Meeting planners will also have better opportunities with a bachelor's degree and some meeting experience.
